Dillinger, the bastard behind MCP

For anyone not familiar with the film TRON (1982), the protagonist, Kevin Flynn, says this classic line after villain MCP (Master Control Program) decides to send all available tanks after Flynn after breaking out of the game grid.

Intentional or not, this short quote introduced the ethical dilemma of creating cyber weapons that may be used against us.

Did Flynn ever expect his own programs to be used against him? Doubtful, because if so, he would have likely developed some sort of mitigation feature. He was described to be a expert computer engineer, so this had to have been due to it being overseen.

Everything was fine until Dillinger decided to improve MCP's capabilities, going from a simple chess program to fully administrative program reigning over the network.

The power that one person can yield with software is unfounded for humans. Unchecked or with a disregard of ethics, an individual can create social discontent, even death or destruction.

TRON may be science fiction, but it presented a modern social dilemma which was ahead of its time. One which we see today, an era of inequality, disparity, and oppression. Cyber weapons are already used against other nations and even against their creator's own population.
